OUR Projects

The main way that the WHS Red Cross Club contributes to the community is through various projects, conducted throughout the school year. Scroll down to learn more!

Woodbury Days Fundraiser

The Woodbury Days Fundraiser is the WHS RCC's main fundraiser. It is comprised of 3 sections: a social media awareness contest, a prize wheel in which the community can learn more about the American Red Cross, and a form of fundraising by selling drinks, which are donated by local companies. In 2019, the club raised almost $2,000 which was donated in its entirety directly to the American Red Cross to help with disaster relief and blood donation services.

Vaccinate A Village

The Vaccinate a Village Fundraiser raises money for the Measles and Rubella Initiative. By donating, students pay for the vaccination of children and families all over the world. One dollar pays for the vaccination of a child, 5 dollars pays for the vaccination of a family, and 10 dollars pays for the vaccination of an entire classroom. In 2019, our fundraiser raised enough money to vaccinate hundreds of people.

Holiday Cards for Heroes

Every holiday season, the WHS Red Cross Club hand-makes over 300 holiday cards to be shipped to various people throughout the world who serve our nation. All materials are donated by the community and each card is unique with a personalized message inside.

Valentine's day blood drive

For the past two years, WHS RCC has put on a Valentine's Day-themed Blood Drive, complete with snacks and a photo booth. In 2019, 40 units of blood were collected, which was used to help over 120 people.

PIllowcase project

The Pillowcase Project was started by the American Red Cross, inspired by college students running out of a dorm fire with all of their possessions in a pillowcase. In this program, high school students participate in an extensive educational course, 5 hours in person and 2 hours online. After finishing this course, they then teach elementary school children about the importance of fire safety and how to stay safe during other natural disasters like thunderstorms and home fires. In the previous years, WHS RCC has taught to students at 3 elementary schools in District 833.

IHL Youth Action campaign

IHL, or International Humanitarian Law, is a body of laws observed by all countries which govern conduct during times of conflict. During the IHL Youth Action Campaign, Team More Aware for Healthcare was able to raise awareness through in-class settings along with a successful social media account and reach over 1,000 people.

Blanket Tying

Towards the end of the school year, the WHS RCC ties blankets to be distributed around the region to people who need them. All materials are donated by the American Red Cross, however, all blankets are tied by Woodbury High School Students. This event is open to all Woodbury High School students and is complete with a movie and snacks as a fun way to hang out and make a positive impact on our surroundings.

Virtual Mapathon with Missing Maps

The Missing Maps Initiative is a revolutionary cross-organization initiative focused on turning satellite images into useable maps for humanitarian workers. These maps have been used in hundreds of different circumstances all over the world, including in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Volunteers work together virtually through Open Street Maps and can plot hundreds of buildings in just a few hours.
