International Humanitarian law Youth Action campaign:

Team More Aware for Healthcare

In the spring of 2019, Team More Aware for Healthcare was formed. Participating in the International Humanitarian Law Youth Action Campaign as a part of the Health Care in Danger Initiative, Christina Li, Leah Hawley, and Caitlyn Currier developed and taught their own curriculum to over 300 of their fellow students at Woodbury High School. This curriculum included an interactive simulation, a slideshow presentation, and videos. By participating in this initiative, students were exposed to various aspects of the International Humanitarian Law and the importance of medical personnel in areas of conflict.

After participating in the program, students were given multiple opportunities to get involved, including raising awareness on social media and joining the club. Thanks to the multitude of support given by students, Team More Aware for Healthcare (Christina Li, Leah Hawley, and Caitlyn Currier) were honored guests at the 2019 Minnesota Red Cross Volunteer Recognition Event.

2018-2019

In the 2018 to 2019 school year, Team More Aware for Healthcare was able to teach in 3 social studies classrooms at Woodbury High School, and reach all 4 grades. In total, they taught over 300 students through 14 separate class periods. During each class period, the students participated in an interactive campaign, designed to demonstrate the effects of war on a community, and a slideshow presentation, filled with case studies and facts from recent years. After these presentations, students were asked to fill out an end of campaign survey, which served as a post-test for the campaign. These tests had a 100% passing rates, with over 40 students saying they had an interest in getting involved with either the club or the American Red Cross. Check out the campaign summary to the right!

What is IHL?

IHL, or International Humanitarian Law, is a body of laws agreed upon by all countries to govern armed conflict. In more common terms, IHL helps protect lives and preserve humanity during times of extreme suffering. It is based upon 4 core values; distinction, military necessity, proportionality, and prevention of unnecessary suffering.

What's Next?

In the 2019-2020 school year, Team More Aware for Healthcare is hoping to reach out to a greater number of students, and not just only at Woodbury High School. Hopefully, by contacting students at other high schools like East Ridge and Park, Team More Aware for Healthcare will be able to inspire students to start their own Red Cross Clubs. Team More Aware for Healthcare is also planning on expanding the social media aspect of their campaign by creating more video content and growing onto other platforms.
