Mapathons

While relatively new, our mapathons have become some of our most favorite and influential events. We began organizing these virtual events to provide an opportunity to make an impact on the world to not only our fellow students and volunteers but also the community. More information about the Missing Maps Initiative can be found on their website.

In order to participate in the mapathons and the initiative as a whole, you must first create an Open Street Maps and HOT Tasking Manager Account. The steps to do so and instructions about how to map are listed below.

How to set up your accounts:

  1. Set up an account with Open Street Maps:

    1. If you prefer a walkthrough video, watch this one!

    2. Open https://www.openstreetmap.org

    3. Click sign up in the upper right hand corner

    4. Fill out all portions of form (email address, display name, password, etc.)

    5. Select Rest of the World for country of residence and agree to the terms

    6. Find the confirmation email in your email inbox and click on the link

    7. Go back to Open Street Maps and login!                                                                                                                                                                      

  2. Login to HOT Tasking Manager:

    1. Open https://tasks.hotosm.org/

    2. Click Log In in the upper right-hand corner

    3. Should automatically link to your Open Street Maps account (if not just log in manually) and Grant Access

    4. Enter the same email address again

    5. Fill out other information in the right-hand side panel (Name, Email, City, etc.)

How to Map:

  1.  Set up

    1. Log into HOT Tasking Manager

    2. Click on the Project you will be working on

    3. Next, click Contribute on the bottom right corner

    4. Click Map a Task on the bottom right corner

    5. If you see this, click Edit now

        6. You will see a red lined border indicating the boundaries of the area of land you will be working on

        7. Make sure your Background is selected as the Bing Aerial Imagery

         8. Zoom in by either scrolling or pressing the + button on the right                                                                                             

2. Marking Buildings

        1. Press the Area button on top

2. We will only be marking buildings. To mark a building, click on each corner of it and continue to do so for the rest of the corners until you get to the last one. Double click the last corner

3. Finally, square your corners by either pressing the Q key on your keyboard or selecting the Square Button

         4. Next, you will have to edit the feature by clicking the Search bar on the left and typing in the word “Building”. Once you found it, click it to officially mark your building as a building                                                                                                                                                                     

3. Saving

  1. Once you have finished mapping around 20 buildings, save your progress. Do so by either clicking the Save button on top or using Ctrl+S

  2. After clicking save, add “#WHSmaps” in the box with all the hashtags without removing all the previously set hashtags *The next time you save, you will not need to add it again because it will already be there*

3. Once you add the hashtag, click Upload

4. When you are done mapping, answer “Is this task completely mapped?” with yes if you have finished mapping your entire square. Answer no if you haven’t finished mapping all the buildings. Only click “The imagery is bad” if you are unable to map buildings from the picture provided

5. Finally, click Submit task

6. It will take you back to the original screen at the beginning, and if you wish to do so, you can map another task by clicking “Map a task” button
